We Can Do Better in Alberta

Michael Ignatieff
is committed to fighting the next federal election in every riding across Canada. That commitment was made especially clear this past summer during the Liberal Leader’s cross-Canada tour. In Edmonton, he spoke to a crowd of 600 people at a Town Hall meeting and attended the Silly Summer Parade in Old Strathcona. In Calgary, 800 people came to meet him at a Stampede breakfast.

“We’ve grown our Party—with new members, new ideas, and the best fundraising in recent memory. We’re more united than we’ve been in a generation,” says Ignatieff. Everywhere he went across our province, he met people who were excited and energized by the prospect of putting Stephen Harper out of a job and building a competitive, compassionate future for all Canadians.

Other Liberal MPs also came to Alberta during the summer to support the work being done here. They included Mark Holland, Justin Trudeau, Hedy Fry, Gerard Kennedy, Scott Brison, Maria Minna and Martha Hall-Findlay. Kennedy, Holland and Minna toured Edmonton and met with local Liberals while Justin Trudeau participated in an event to raise money for youth delegates to the Liberal Convention. Scott Brison met with business leaders, the Journal editorial board, Alberta Building Trades Council and local Liberals.

Fry had an especially busy schedule that included a tour of the Alberta Crafts Council, participation in both the Edmonton Pride Parade and a Multicultural Forum. She returned to Edmonton a few weeks later to meet with Chinese, African, and Muslim cultural groups.

All MPs expressed support and optimism that Albertans will send Liberal MPs to Ottawa in the next election. Martha Hall Findlay attended the nomination of talented Edmonton candidate Mary MacDonald, who she is confident will eventually unseat Conservative incumbent Laurie Hawn.

As election fever heats up this fall, there will be more visits from Liberal MPs. In September, Ralph Goodale will visit Edmonton and Carolyn Bennett will tour Calgary. These MPs will continue to promote the view that, after four years of denial, division and discord, Stephen Harper’s time is up. Liberals are ready to offer Canadians a new vision of a bigger, more unified and hopeful Canada. As Michael Ignatieff says: “A Canada that is generous and open. A Canada that inspires. That leads the world by example. That makes us all proud.”

Our country is waiting—Let’s get started.
