“Alberta's population is made up of many ethnic backgrounds. Newcomers are encouraged to keep their traditions when they move here. Albertans are fortunate to be exposed to so many different foods, dances and cultures, as part of everyday life.
The province celebrates multiculturalism by celebrating the first Monday in August as Heritage Day, a statutory holiday.” – About Alberta

"In only a century and a quarter since Confederation, Canadians have shaped out of the North American wilderness one of the most privileged societies on the face of the earth. Ranking among the seven most prosperous nations in the world, Canada is rich not only in the abundance of our resources and the magnificence of our land, but also in the diversity and the character of our people. We have long been known as one of the most tolerant, progressive, innovative, caring and peaceful societies in existence."

What is Multi-culturalism?
"Canadian multiculturalism is fundamental to our belief that all citizens are equal. Multiculturalism ensures that all citizens can keep their identities, can take pride in their ancestry and have a sense of belonging. Acceptance gives Canadians a feeling of security and self-confidence, making them more open to, and accepting of, diverse cultures. The Canadian experience has shown that multiculturalism encourages racial and ethnic harmony and cross-cultural understanding, and discourages ghettoization, hatred, discrimination and violence."

Canadian Heritage Foundation
The Heritage Canada Foundation is a national, membership-based organization and registered charity established in 1973. The Honourable Jean Chrétien, the minister responsible for the foundation's creation, said at that time: "Maturity may be recognized in a nation when its people take thought for their past: take thought... in the dynamic sense of knowing the past as a key to understanding the present and future."
The letters patent which established the Heritage Canada Foundation gave it the mandate to:
Celebrate Our Heritage
Heritage Day is an opportunity to celebrate the architectural heritage and historic places of Canada. The Heritage Canada Foundation promotes the third Monday in February each year as Heritage Day and has long advocated adopting this date as a national holiday.
This year, HCF is celebrating Heritage and the Environment: Saving Places Built to Last.
A number of useful resources are now available to assist communities to develop a program around this theme—whether it is to celebrate the inherently green credentials of historic buildings, highlight how they have been upgraded to more environmentally friendly standards, or to offer information on how to “green” a heritage building.

"I wish to emphasize the view of the government that a policy of multiculturalism within a bilingual framework is basically the conscious support of individual freedom of choice. We are free to be ourselves. But this cannot be left to chance. It must be fostered and pursued actively. If freedom of choice is in danger for some ethnic groups, it is in danger for all. It is the policy of this government to eliminate any such danger and to "safeguard" this freedom . . ."
