Liberal Awards of Merit
In recognition of dedication and service to the party and its commissions, there are several awards of merit presented at each Convention of the Liberal Party of Canada in Alberta.

Liberal of the Year Award
Since its inception in 1987, this award is annually presented to an Albertan who demonstrates unparalleled service and commitment to the party and its initiatives.

Riding of the Year
Created in 2000, this award is given to the riding association demonstrating excellence in the following five areas:
1. Membership retention and expansion;

5. Participation in federal Liberal activities at the national and provincial level.

Anne McLellan Award Celebrating Leadership by Women in the Liberal Party

Liberal of the Century Award
Joseph Dechene

MP, Athabasca (elected 1940, 1945, 1949, 1953, 1957)
The Liberal of the Century is a special, one-time-only award that was given to mark Alberta's Centennial Year in 2005. The recipient was the longest-serving elected Liberal in Alberta history, Joseph Dechene. Mr. Dechene was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Beaver River in 1921, and served until 1935. In 1940, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Athabasca, and served until 1958, when he retired at the age of 79. His son was also active in the party, as is his grandson, Chuck Dechene, currently a prominent member of both the Liberal Party of Canada in Alberta and the Alberta Liberal Party.
