Liberal of the Century Award

Joseph Dechene

MLA, Beaver River (elected 1921, 1930)
MP, Athabasca (elected 1940, 1945, 1949, 1953, 1957)

The Liberal of the Century is a special, one-time-only award that was given to mark Alberta's Centennial Year in 2005. The recipient was the longest-serving elected Liberal in Alberta history, Joseph Dechene. Mr. Dechene was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Beaver River in 1921, and served until 1935. In 1940, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Athabasca, and served until 1958, when he retired at the age of 79. His son was also active in the party, as is his grandson, Chuck Dechene, currently a prominent member of both the Liberal Party of Canada in Alberta and the Alberta Liberal Party.
